In between writing something new, I finally did what I should have done a long time ago: to prepare a new Review Index with only the English-language articles in it. I replaced the older index, which I had not updated for over a year, with it, but still left a link to the original. This is just a quick fix to end the chaos of the old index, but in the future there will be three lists: the master index with the English reviews, a legacy list of the German reviews and a third index of all the DVDs in my collection, the latter two for requesting purposes. At the moment, there are “only” 44 reviews in the new main index, but I hope to write slowly, but steadily more. If anyone has requests for unreviewed discs or untranslated reviews, I’d like to hear them! You can always contact me here in the comments, via Email or over on Google+, Twitter or Facebook.

So, in lieu of any actually new reviews, please accept this index as proof that DVDLog isn’t dead yet! Two brand-new reviews are in the making, but judging from the extremely warm weather coming in the next days, they are still going to take a while – one of the discs hasn’t even arrived here yet!

Rumours of this website’s demise, etc… I had great plans for DVDLog this December, but for a whole lot of different reasons none of these really worked out and I’m still sitting on a pile of un- and half-finished material. This happenend mainly because I lost my writing mojo a little again, but also because of the low influx of new DVDs at the moment. But this does definitively not mean I’m giving up here, quite the contrary – the plan is still to review a few new discs, translate more of my older articles into English and maybe write some other posts about movies and television.

I will try to do at least one little review before the holidays and maybe write another article – I hope I can get this done before the week is out. But I’m not sure if I will be doing the traditional DVD Recap this year, since there are only very few discs worth mentioning. Perhaps I’ll do it later in January after a winter break, which I will need to recharge my batteries, make some adjustments to the website like translating the menus and cleaning up the review list – I hope I can get back to a semi-regular update rhythm at the latest in February. 

But I’m not gone! I’m actually a little busy elsewhere – I’m posting daily images over on my Photography Blog and sometimes over on the original Bibra-Online.de website about everything from Space & Astronomy to Vintage Computers and Webdesign. And of course you can follow all my shenanigans on my Google+ stream – and on Facebook and Twitter, but I’m not as active as on G+ there.

I know it’s been a while since the last update, but I decided to take it easy for another week while I battle the effects of the autumn weather and prepare some new articles – I may have nothing for next week, but I’m working on several reviews at the moment. Meanwhile I’d like to send you once again over to DVD Savant, where Glenn Erickson is posting a lot of fabulous reviews twice a week – even if you are not particularly interested in the movies he writes about, his articles are so fascinating that they are worth reading nevertheless. Myself, I’ll be back next week with a counter-review to Gravity and then maybe some really old stuff.

Since the weather is absolutely not cooperating and the heat makes coherent writing really difficult, I’m putting DVDLog on a summer hiatus. I have occasionally done this before and this doesn’t mean I am going to abandon the website, just that I won’t be writing any major long reviews at the moment. The occasional shorter post may appear, but for now I will keep my activities very limited here. But you can always follow me on Google+ or Facebook and see what I’m up to on all my websites, although I’m only really active over on my photography blog at the moment. Here on DVDLog I’ll be fully back when I have re-acquired my writing groove after the warm weather.

I don’t have anything new this week to post, but I’ve finally made a decision: DVDLog is going to make a switch from German to English this year. It’s going to be a very gradual process, but I am going to write all new reviews in English now and there will be translations of my favourite older articles to fill some gaps when I haven’t got new material to write about. There are two reasons for the change: I want to expand my readership with the help of Google+, which has already begun to work, and writing in English has proved to be much more fun than in German. I hope that the regular readers won’t mind, probably most of you understand enough English to follow my articles.

Apart from some slight language changes in the blog template, nothing else is going to change. I still try to do a weekly update and I’m actually working on something new right now which should be ready next Monday. I’m slowly beginning to get my groove back after the winter and in April and May a few fresh DVDs should be coming in, so maybe it’s going to be a busy spring here on the website.

Nach langer Zeit habe ich gestern endlich mal wieder ein bißchen am Layout geschraubt und ein paar neue Fonts eingebaut: raus mit LucidaGrande, rein mit OpenSans im Fließtext, im Artikelkopf kommt außerdem CartoGothic zum Einsatz. Die Zeichensätze sind als Webfonts per @fontface im CSS-Code eingebunden und sollten auf allen aktuellen Browsern funktionieren – mit Safari und auf mobilen Geräten gibt es derzeit noch einen leichten Positionierungsfehler im Artikelkopf, den ich noch reparieren muß, aber ansonsten dürfte alles funktionieren. Umgestellt sind im Moment nur die WordPress-Bereiche der Webseite und die Reviewliste, die Kritiken selbst werden demnächst aber auch noch drankommen.

Außerdem verkünde ich hiermit mal wieder eine kleine Pause, zumindest was die DVD-Kritiken betrifft. Nächste und übernächste Woche wird es keine neuen Reviews geben, weil ich für Anfang nächsten Monat etwas vorbereiten will (Stichwort Tati!). Deshalb wird es die nächsten Reviews erst wieder um den 5. November herum geben, aber in der Zwischenzeit sind natürlich andere Postings nicht ausgeschlossen, wenn sich die Gelegenheit bietet.

Wie ich schon ein paarmal erwähnt hatte, wollte ich schon lange den Kommentarbereich etwas überarbeiten, besonders nachdem ich das drüben bei Bibra-Online.de schon im Rahmen eines größeren Redesigns Mitte Mai getan hatte. Heute habe ich die Basteleien am Kommentarbereich hier auch abgeschlossen und mit ein paar Dutzend neuen Zeilen im CSS-Code und ein paar Anpassungen im Template den Kommentarbereich überarbeitet. Die Änderungen halten sich in Grenzen und an den Funktionen hat sich nichts verändert, aber es sieht jetzt etwas aufgeräumter und moderner aus.

Getestet habe ich die Änderungen mit Opera 12, Firefox 13 und Chrome 20, die alles perfekt darstellen. Mit dem Internet Explorer 8 werden die Kanten nicht gerundet, aber im IE9 klappt das sogar – aber für den Microsoft-Browser übernehme ich keine Garantie. Feedback bitte hier in den Kommentaren posten, oder wenn jemand gar keine Kommentare mehr posten kann, dann per Email. Testpostings sind erwünscht, es sollte aber alles in Ordnung sein.

Ich merks schon, das gibt am Montag wieder nichts mit einer neuen DVD-Kritik. Die Luft ist im Moment einfach raus – ich habe zwar mehrere Artikel in der Pipeline, komme aber mit dem Schreiben einfach nicht voran. Das wird schon wieder vorübergehen, aber in der Zwischenzeit werde ich erst einmal keine wöchentlichen neuen DVD-Kritiken veröffentlichen. Damit die Webseite trotzdem lebendig bleibt, werde ich aber trotzdem an jedem Sonntag oder Montag etwas posten – sei es ein sonstiger Artikel oder vielleicht eine ältere Review aus dem Archiv.

Es lohnt sich deshalb also, weiterhin vorbeizuschauen – ich werde zwischendurch auch etwas an der Webseite selbst basteln, denn ich wollte den Kommentarbereich etwas überarbeiten und neben der Twitter-Verknüpfung auch eine Anbindung an Facebook und Google+ einzubauen.

Ich weiß, langsam reißt es ein, aber mit bleibt nichts anderes übrig, als diese Woche noch eine Pause einzulegen. Es ist ja nicht meine Schuld, daß das Wetter so gut war und der Film, über den ich eigentlich etwas schreiben wollte, drinnen liegengeblieben ist, während der Balkon gerufen hat… nächste Woche gehts dann aber weiter mit einer relativ frischen DVD und irgendwann muß ja auch die LeCarré-Reihe weitergehen. Ich bin nicht weg, nur… verreist, sozusagen :-).

DVDLog macht diese Woche eine kleine Pause, die eventuell auch noch auf die nächste Woche ausgedehnt wird. Der kurzzeitige Frühling hat zu einer (angenehmen) Störung in der Produktivität geführt und die Artikel-Vorräte sind im Moment erschöpft. Weiter gehts aber demnächst mit noch mehr Billy Wilder, ein paar halbwegs aktuellen DVDs und bei 50 Jahre James Bond muß ich auch unbedingt mal was machen. Be seeing you! :-)
